Thriving Outdoors: How Adventure Group Therapy Fosters Growth for Autistic Young Adults

Young adults participate weekly in our Adventure Group which takes therapy outdoors into the community and encourages exercise and healthy living. Adventure groups are led by a therapist and are meant to challenge the young adults in different environments and settings, helping them manage and work through these obstacles.

Adventure group therapy represents an innovative approach to supporting autistic young adults. By combining therapeutic techniques with adventurous and experiential activities, this method aims to foster personal growth, social skills, and emotional resilience. Bungee Fitness is one of our newest Adventure Group activities!

Adventure group therapy integrates traditional therapeutic practices with outdoor and adventure-based activities. The goal is to create a dynamic environment where participants can engage in self-discovery, build relationships, and develop skills in a supportive and stimulating setting.

Students are introduced to various activities that improve their physical dexterity and tolerance for different types of sensory stimulation. This intern creates more tolerance for completing daily activities and challenges presented to these individuals.

Students recently went to a local ice-skating rink.

Adventure group aids students in growing their confidence in a variety of settings. Students have experienced sensory deprivation float tanks, several different exhibits at the local science museum. A favorite adventure among the students is a combination petting zoo and ice cream shop, in Delray.

Adventure group therapy offers a unique and enriching approach to supporting autistic young adults. By blending therapeutic principles with adventurous activities, this method not only promotes skill development but also provides a vibrant and engaging environment for personal growth.

For those interested in exploring this approach, it’s beneficial to seek programs, such as New Directions, that tailor activities to individual needs and emphasize safety and support. Adventure group therapy holds the promise of a transformative experience, empowering participants to thrive in new and exciting ways.
