New Directions has been very successful integrating students into the community, through volunteer work. Helping Hands Boca and Tri-County Humane Society are two of the main organizations New Directions works with to get students involved in community work.
Volunteering within the local community has been imperative to the success of many individuals in the program. The students can learn in a professional environment how to socialize and work with others, build up their physical and mental stamina to work a paid job, learn marketable skills that apply to paid positions, all while helping the local community.
Led by New Directions Vocational Director Paula Katz, students are transported weekly to volunteer at Helping Hands Food Pantry where they volunteer to supply local families in need with donated food.
Tri-county Humane Society, a no kill shelter in Boca Raton, is another avenue for students to volunteer. Several times a week students volunteer at the shelter by walking, reading, and providing love and care to the animals in need. Students provide necessary services to the humane society while enriching their own lives through human and animal interaction.
