Top Ten Reasons Spectrum Young Adults seek Transitional Living Programs 

  1. Executive Functioning Deficits
      • This includes difficulties with schedules and homework assignments
  2. Depression and/or Anxiety
      • At least 50% percent of individuals with Autism also suffer from Anxiety or Depression
  3. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
      • Many individuals with autism are first diagnosed with ADD or ADHD.
      • Many who utilize the services in transitional living programs also suffer from co-morbid issues related to anxiety
  4. Social Difficulties and or Deficits. Social skill training.
      • Organized social skill training groups can be very helpful for individuals with Autism.  Groups that are properly structured and targeted can have a huge impact on functioning. This includes functioning in the social, academic, and vocational areas.
  5. Life Management Skills (LMS) (i.e., Independent Life Skills)
      • Skills in the home environment are also essential to help young adults achieve independence.
      • Cooking is often an area which young adults with Autism need training.
  6. “Failure to thrive” issues (Difficulties finding employment and achieving financial independence)
      • Failure to thrive issues can take on many forms.  Some of these issues can be more “Clinical” than others.  Seeking a program that has good therapeutic services is therefore essential.
  7. Substance Dependence Issus
      • Self-medicating behavior is something that often occurs with young adults who are on the autism spectrum both in and outside of transitional living programs. Marijuana and alcohol are often the “drug of choice.”  Specialized and appropriate therapeutic substance interventions for individuals on the spectrum is also recommended.
      • Quality Psychiatric services is highly recommended.
      • Substance abuse meetings in the community such as AA and others can also be helpful when appropriate.
  8. Relationship Problems / Codependency Issues
      • Social Skill training groups can be very helpful in this area
      • CODA meetings in the community can also be helpful when appropriate.
  9. Parent Discord
      • Family therapy can be very helpful in addressing family discord.
  10. Failures related to educational (i.e., school dropout)
      • Academic services and assistance with organization can be very useful in this area.
